Regional Parliamentary Seminar “Africa’s Regional Parliaments: State of Development, Cooperation and Potential”Midrand, South Africa – May 17-18, 2012
The SADC Parliamentary Forum and AWEPA are organising a regional parliamentary seminar entitled “Africa’s Regional Parliaments: State of Development, Cooperation and Potential.” The seminar will bring together SADC-PF members and staff and representatives of other SADC institutions, members of other African regional parliaments, PAP members, NEPAD, members of the European Parliament, other European MPs, researchers and AWEPA staff. The conference will serve to favour dialogue and experience exchange among Africa’s Regional Parliamentary Bodies (RPBs) on their respective development processes, key milestones towards becoming a regional parliament, the current state of interaction and division of labour among regional parliamentary bodies, and with the Pan-African parliament, in the African context. The main outcome of the seminar, in line with the project objectives, will be to collect good practices and strategies for the SADC-PF to employ towards its transformation into a fully-fledged regional parliament. The discussion will also focus on the RPBs respective roles and initiatives as concerns the monitoring of international commitments made to parliaments in Paris, Accra and Busan as part of the international reform process to strengthen development effectiveness.
